Grande Prairie AB – The Spirit River Rangers continued there winning ways in the post season with a narrow 3-2 win over the Grande Prairie Athletics on opening night in the North Peace Hockey League playoffs.
Having won four straight league championships Grande Prairie will have to find a way to turn the tides as they head back to Spirit River for game 2 on Thursday night.
With both teams trading a goal apiece in each the first and second the A’s couldn’t convert in the early moments of the third before finding themselves in penalty trouble. Despite killing off an extended 5 on 3 a double minor late in the third proved costly when Rangers forward Nathan Smith somehow snuck one past a screened Dave Larson.
Grande Prairie wasn’t without chances but the club just couldn’t find a way to capitalize.
