Athletics Advance

Lucky 11’s

Mother Nature once again played havoc with local Peace Country roads this week. As numerous games throughout the NPHL were cancelled on Thursday there was a question as to whether or not the Grande Prairie Athletics would be able to get to Dawson Creek on Friday night to conclude the back half of a back to back set of games this week.

Despite the snow and unsuitable road conditions the A’s made the trek.

It wasn’t without some concerns along the way.

Only eleven skaters would make the trip West and having to face slow moving traffic along the highways the team arrived 5 minutes before 8 o’clock (which signifies the start of warmup). The Senior Canucks were gracious enough to give the Athletics some time to get dressed and par-take in a full warmup.

The odds not technically in their favour Grande Prairie paced themselves to a 4 to 1 lead after the first twenty minutes. Paul Larocque would score two in the first with Matt Albanati and Tyrell Mason adding the others.

With such a short bench it was the start the A’s would need.

Both teams traded 2 goals apiece in the second to make it 6 to 3.

With the players wearing down Grande Prairie managed to lock it down in the third period keeping Dawson off the scoreboard and gaining any momentum in the final twenty minutes.

11 skaters would eventually make it 11 wins on the season for the A’s pushing them into a 9 point lead over idle Spirit River and Fort St. John.

With the remaining weekend off the Athletics will now look toward the following week where they will play their final two games of 2013 before departing for the NPHL Christmas break.

It will be another tough set of back to back games as they host the Dawson Creek Canucks this Thursday followed by their final regular season road trip to Fort St. John the following night.
