Two games on the schedule this week beginning tonight in Dawson Creek as the Grande Prairie Athletics will look to try and inch closer to clinching first place in the NPHL’s Western Division.
As news broke Monday night that the Hythe Mustangs had folded it made the outcome for first pretty simple. Win two games.
The second half of the season the Athletics have found themselves trailing the surging Fort St. John Flyers for top spot in the West. With the Flyers off last week the A’s finally found themselves back in first following two wins over the Hythe Mustangs and Grimshaw Huskies. The four points put Grande Prairie back in first place with four games remaining.
With the Mustangs folding it has left every club but Fort St. John with one less game to play. The Flyers were scheduled to host the Mustangs this Friday and then conclude their regular season February 7th in Hythe. Both games have been cancelled giving the Flyers two wins in the process while once again pushing them into first overall.
The A’s, Rangers, and Canucks all will be awarded two points which didn’t change much.
Grande Prairie comes into tonights game at Dawson needing two wins in their final three games to secure top spot in the West. It won’t be an easy week.
With games against the Canucks, Flyers and Rangers to wrap up the season Grande Prairie will need their best. At the start of January Grande Prairie lost three consecutive games to each of these clubs. The A’s haven’t played either team since.
The Canucks on the other hand are chasing the Spirit River Rangers for third overall in the West. Entering tonights contest Dawson Creek trails the Rangers by just one point but also one more game played. With games against Grande Prairie and Spirit River next week a win tonight would go along way to making third place a reality for the Canucks.
Tonight’s game will take place at the Memorial Arena in Dawson Creek. Game time is scheduled for 8:30pm. Join us on the road or follow us on Twitter @GPAthletics for in game updates.
