Athletics Use Big Third To Even Series
Spirit River AB – The Grande Prairie Athletics clawed back into the game and into the series with a 5 to 4 win Thursday night over the Spirit River Rangers.
Having dropped the opening game at home on Tuesday night the Grande Prairie Athletics looked to regain home ice advantage with a win Thursday night in Spirit. In the opening 10 minutes it looked bleak following 3 goals from Spirit River. Yet despite the deficit the Athletics scored two straight in the final 10 minutes to pull to within one. Andrew Buote scored Grande Prairie’s first knocking a home a rebound and Dennis Rix would score short handed on a beautiful individual effort.
Feeding off the momentum Grande Prairie found themselves tied early in the third as Morgan MacLean tied at three. Both clubs traded chances throughout the middle frame but in the final 5 minutes the Rangers pulled ahead once more on a goal from Nathan Smith.
The third proved to be the period the A’s needed. Mac Caron found himself in behind the Rangers defense and tied the game after going post and in at 16:37. Much of the third was played tight as both teams had chances but couldnt score and yet just when it looked like overtime was on the horizon Morgan MacLean scored a beautiful backhand with 14.5 seconds remaining to take the lead and the eventual win.
With the win Grande Prairie evens the series at 1 and the series shifts back to Grande Prairie for game 3 Saturday night at the Coca Cola Centre.
