Fort St. John, BC – The Grande Prairie Athletics (6-3-1, 13pts) had their season high five game winning streak abruptly ended following a 6-2 loss to the Fort St. John Flyers (9-1-0, 18pts) at the North Peace Arena Thursday night.
Trailing 3 to 2 heading into the third, a dismal final frame sealed it for the Athletics.
Grande Prairie would outshoot the Flyers in the first 12-11 but the only goal scored came off the stick of Jake Ebner with 6:28 remaining.
The Athletics would fall behind by two early in the second period following a powerplay goal from Brady Busche, who ripped a one timer top shelf behind starting goaltender Dave Larson. Having found themselves trailing much of the second the Athletics eventually solved goaltender Troy Hunt when Mac Caron scored a tap in on a pretty passing play from forward Blake Clement (5:57). The one goal deficit didn’t last long when Adam Horst tapped in a rebound at 5:06 to put the Flyers back up by two, 3-1. The A’s would respond once more pulling to within one after a shorthanded goal on a strong individual effort from Blake Clement with ten seconds remaining in the second.
That would be as close as Grande Prairie would get for the remainder of the night. Andrew Payou, Brennen Giroux, and Rick Cleaver would round out the scoring in the third to seal another win over the Athletics and push their lead in the division to 5pts.
Following the loss the A’s record drops to (0-2-1) on the season against Fort St. John.
The A’s return home Thursday, December 8th and host the Fort St. John Flyers at 8:30 pm at the Coca Cola Centre. Before that the team is holding it’s annual pub night fundraiser Friday night, if you’re an A’s fan and are interested in partaking in the fundraiser please contact us via Social Media (Facebook or Twitter).
