It’s been 3 weeks since the Grande Prairie Athletics last seen action courtesy of the annual NPHL break/Christmas holidays and while the rest of the league got back into the swing of things last week the A’s found themselves with an extra week off.
Grande Prairie entered the Christmas break in first place while supporting an impressive 12 and 1 record in an always tough and competitive West Division. Much of the story of the first half of the NPHL year undoubtedly had to belong to Mother Nature. Bad roads and a record snowfall in and around the Grande Prairie area has caused numerous cancellations not just for the Athletics but the rest of the league as well.
Needless to say the A’s now find themselves playing two extra games and eleven in total in the final month of the regular season.
The good news for Grande Prairie is they currently sit alone in first place. Both the Fort St. John Flyers and Spirit River Rangers are tied at 21 points, 3 behind the Athletics, with Grande Prairie having multiple games in hand on both teams.
The bad news, the Athletics will play both teams back to back to open up the second half of the NPHL regular season and follow it up with a Saturday night home game against the Dawson Creek Canucks.
The A’s last seen action on December 19th in Grande Prairie when they managed to come from behind scoring 3 in the third period to defeat the Dawson Creek Canucks 5 to 3 at the Coca Cola Centre. The following night the club was expected to make their final regular season trip to Fort St. John but much as it has early on this season the weather would once again require the game to be rescheduled.
Because of that the A’s find themselves in another rare Wednesday night game in Fort St. John to open up the week.
With eleven games still remaining in the schedule it’s tough to say where the Athletics will finish in the overall standings when all is said and done but it’s a safe assumption that this week could play a major role in determining just that.
News and Notes:
As the final month begins the date to finalize rosters is looming. January 10th will mark a trim down on the team roster to 25. The A’s have signed two more defensemen prior to the deadline and will be finalizing their roster before the end of the week.
