Dawson Creek Canucks (6-5-0) 4th in West at Grande Prairie Athletics (11-1-0) 1st in West
The Grande Prairie Athletics play their final home game of 2013 tonight when they host the Dawson Creek Canucks in a NPHL Western division game. This will be the second game in a row for the A’s versus Dawson Creek as last Saturday they defeated the Canucks 6 to 3 in an impressive win featuring just 11 skaters.
This is the final weekend of action in the NPHL and the Athletics will play back to back games for the third consecutive week. Tonights game is the first of two, tomorrow night Grande Prairie will be in Fort St. John to conclude 2013.
The Big Story:
The final weekend of play before the Christmas break in the NPHL proves to be a big one for the Athletics. With a five point lead over second place (with a game in hand) heading into tonights action this weekend could prove a big one come the final game of the NPHL regular season.
With five games against each divisional opponent the A’s currently have an opportunity to win two season series tonight and tomorrow if they succeed with wins over both Dawson Creek and Fort St. John.
Both games will push Grande Prairie to the halfway mark of games played with fourteen for the current season and they could find themselves with a nice 7 point lead over second place before they embark on their annual Christmas break.
It’s been no real secret that the Athletics have had to struggle through a tough stretch with a short bench the past few weeks. Regardless of the lack of bodies the A’s continue to push forward. Tonight should be no exception and the club should have a few more skaters in the lineup for tonights game. Much is at stake with an opportunity to really try and cement themselves as the top seed in the West. A hungry Dawson Creek team won’t prove an easy game and a good start will be imperative tonight.
Dawson Creek on the other hand will be looking to avenge a loss they feel they could have won last Friday night. Despite dropping the first game of the weekend with a loss to Grande Prairie they rebounded promptly with a 9 to 4 win over the visiting Manning Comets. The win put the Canucks up 8 points over last place Hythe and just three back of third place Spirit River.
The weather continues to play a role in the NPHL season and the cold shouldn’t postpone the game tonight. As is the case with both clubs it should be another typical entertaining game.
