Athletics Escape Flyers, Remain Undefeated

It took them until the 1:33 mark of the third period to pull ahead, but the Grande Prairie Athletics once again handled business against the Fort St. John Flyers on Thursday night.

Playing their first game in two weeks and against an opponent with a short bench the rust showed throughout the course of the game for the Athletics.

Much as they have throughout this season the A’s would score first. Blaine Bablitz opened the scoring on the powerplay after firing a puck off the post and in behind Flyers starting goalie Troy Hunt. The would-be early lead however would be short lived when Adam Horst would score blocker side past A’s starting netminder Darren Walker.

Both teams would trade goals for the rest of the night but it wasn’t until 7 minutes left in the third when Fort St. John would gain their first lead of the game. A seeing eye shot from the point from Adam Horst would ping pong off forward Robbie Sidhu in front and then off Walkers arm and into the back of the net to put the Flyers ahead 3 to 2.

Yet despite the struggles throughout the course of the game for the Athletics and a Fort St. John team who was slowing Grande Prairie down by clogging up the neutral zone they eventually found a way.

Playing in his first game of the season forward Rod Bowers would take a feed off the draw from Kelly McLeod and push one through the five hole of Hunt to tie the game at the five minute mark. Each team from that point had a couple of chances but A’s defensemen Tyrell Mason would eventually score the go ahead goal with 1:33 remaining.

Grande Prairie did a good job limiting the Flyers from exiting their zone in the final minute, when they did gain entry the A’s shot blockers took over to cement the win and improve the Athletics to 6 and 0 and give them a share of top spot in the NPHL.

That share of top spot will be answered this Saturday night as number one in the East will face number one in the West when Grande Prairie travels to Manning to square off against the Comets in the only game between both clubs this regular season.
