A’s forward Blake Clement would score the eventual game winner as the Grande Prairie Athletics responded with a 3 to 1 win over the Falher pirates helping snap a current two game losing streak.
It was apparent from the drop of the puck that Grande Prairie wasn’t about to drop their third straight with continuous pressure on Pirates goalie Jordan Panasiuk. While there wasn’t much to show on the score sheet in the opening twenty minutes Grande Prairie managed to keep the Pirates netminder busy peppering him with 23 shots in the opening frame.
The second seemed to display much of the same as Grande Prairie continued to pressure the Pirates but couldn’t find the back of the net. Finally, as luck would have it, Grande Prairie gained the lead as Grant Rix’s shot hit a Pirates player in front and redirected past Panasiuk giving Grande Prairie a 1 to 0 lead (assists to Lyndin Lewis and Brock Clement).
That seemed to spark the Athletics as moments later Clement would score (from Mac Caron and Morgan MacLean) on a pretty finish giving the A’s an important 2 to 0 lead heading into the third period.
With just 16 shots through two periods the Pirates got back into the game early on following a Powerplay goal from Craig Anderson. Despite giving up an early goal Grande Prairie managed to keep their foot on the gas and eventually sealed it when Nolan Trudeau snuck one past Panasiuk giving the A’s the win 3 to 1.
Grande Prairie moves to 2-1-1 on the season and faces an important test this Thursday night when they travel to Fort St. John to visit the league leading Flyers. The Flyers come in on a current 5 game win streak after opening the season with two losses to Dawson Creek and Grande Prairie.
