A’s Back in Win Column

Perhaps it was the wake up call the Grande Prairie Athletics needed. Having dropped three straight games to start 2014 the A’s found themselves in a position pretty unfamiliar to them. It may not seem like a lot to most but for Grande Prairie their last losing streak came nearly three years ago.

Yet, despite the losses and having some questions asked it seems to have provided a spark.

Following a 9 to 2 drubbing at the hands of the Spirit River Rangers the A’s have responded with two of their more complete games of the season. A loss last Saturday to Dawson Creek was a disappointment but the team felt it had one of it’s better efforts in quite awhile.

That same work ethic was brought to the game Thursday night in Hythe and finally the team received the results they were looking for.

Five second period goals followed by three more in the third paced Grande Prairie to an 8 to 2 win over the last place Hythe Mustangs and helped the A’s pull to within one of the NPHL West division leading Fort St. John Flyers.

More importantly the club appears to have found some of that “mojo” they had been lacking the past five games or so.

The A’s will now welcome the Falher Pirates to the Coca Cola Centre this Saturday night for a matchup against one of the NPHL’s better Eastern Division teams.

It hasn’t been to friendly for Eastern Division teams playing the West this season as teams from the West hold a 15 to 1 record. The lone victory for the East was the Manning Comets over the Hythe Mustangs way back on opening weekend.

Still this matchup will have some significance for those who have followed both clubs.

Falher’s visit will mark their first trip to Grande Prairie since winning the Campbell Cup at the Coca Cola Centre in overtime in game 7 two seasons ago.
